THE BESPOKE OBJECT: BALL-JOINTED DOLL !

___

In my art practice, I explore identity- specifically Middle Eastern and Muslim identities and work toward challenging the stereotypes associated with them. I do this by combining these identities with pop culture to reshape perceptions within these media. For this project, my idea is to create a ball-jointed doll (BJD) of a Middle Eastern woman wearing the hijab! As an artist my goal is to be someone that creates something I never had. I've always been a huge toy and figure collector, from childhood to now. Growing up, I never saw anyone like me properly represented in media, especially toys or figures, so this project is my way of addressing that gap by making a BJD.

A ball-jointed doll (BJD) is an articulated doll with ball-and-socket joints, allowing for a high level of movement and posing. I chose to create a BJD specifically because dolls are a widely recognized and culturally significant medium for representation, especially in childhood but also in collector communities. BJDs, in particular, are popular for their customizability and artistry, making them a perfect format for exploring identity. After extensive research, I realized that modeling the entire doll from scratch would present significant challenges, especially as this is my first time creating something like this. To make the process smoother, I referenced a BJD I have in my collection. I also found this model on Thingiverse that I used as a foundation. From there, I modified and reshaped the parts to align with my vision while keeping the original joint mechanisms intact for proper articulation. I also came across this artist who documents their process in a really detailed and informal way, which was super helpful. Seeing their approach gave me a better understanding of the steps involved in creating a piece like this.

My overarching goal for this doll is to print it, paint it, and design a variety of alternative subculture-inspired outfits for it. However, due to time constraints, my current focus is on ensuring that the doll functions properly in its physical form. To achieve this, I plan to first 3D print the model using an FDM printer to identify and refine any adjustments. Once the structure is refined, I will resin-print the final model and string it with elastic so it can come to life. This is a project I’ve been working on since last year, but because it’s technically demanding my primary goal is to bring the doll to life by finalizing its body and articulation.

This object fits the framework of "The Bespoke Object” as it’s completely custom-made to represent an identity and perspective that’s been largely missing from mainstream media. Instead of being a generic, mass-produced doll, this BJD is carefully designed to reflect a Middle Eastern woman in a way that is authentic and intentional. It is tailored not just in its physical design but also in its purpose—serving as both a personal expression and a broader statement about representation in media. This project engages with themes of identity, culture, and self-expression, making it more than just a doll.
