THE BESPOKE OBJECT REVISITED - WEEK 2 !

Arm changes & Rounded joints

This week, I focused on refining the doll’s design. After meeting with Bryan, he pointed out that some of the joints were too thin and prone to breaking. He suggested reinforcing the ball-jointed aesthetic and rounding out the edges to improve both durability and movement.

Taking his advice, I adjusted the knee, thigh, upper, and lower leg joints to create smoother transitions and add strength. I also revisited the arm structure- originally, I had designed it with just two segments, but after thinking it over, I added a third joint. This extra piece really improved the doll’s range of motion. To make the change, I used the split tool and the Boolean function so the new joint would fit properly with the shoulder and upper arm.

Beyond that, I went through my reference photos to check for any fragile areas, reinforcing weak spots and adding material where needed to improve printability. At this point, I think the doll is nearly complete.

The last thing I’m considering is the elastic. The thicker elastic I used before made some parts, especially the head, harder to move. Since I’ve now rescaled the head, I’m hoping that fixes the issue, but if not, I’ll switch to a thinner elastic to make sure everything moves smoothly.

Next, I’ll reprint the updated pieces, clean off any support material, and restring the doll to see how everything comes together !
